Lasting Powers of Attorney
A Lasting Power of Attorney allows you to choose people you trust to help you make decisions or, where appropriate, make decisions on your behalf.
Two different LPAs
Property and Financial Affairs
This can cover matters such as bank accounts, bills, pensions, investments and property. Once registered, it can be used while you still have capacity if you have chosen to allow this and you give your authority.
Health and Welfare
This can cover decisions about medical treatment, care, where you live and day-to-day welfare. Your attorneys can only make a particular health or welfare decision when you lack capacity to make that decision yourself.
Why plan ahead?
An LPA allows you to choose in advance who you would trust to act. Without one, family members do not automatically gain authority over all of your financial or welfare decisions if you later lose capacity.
